Newcastle United and other striped shirt clubs could learn from animal kingdom, claims university study
Footballers who wear stripes may learn in the animal kingdom how to confuse their competitors – if they run.
Research indicates that their predators may confuse by looking to be blurred when they move.
To get out this, scientists at Newcastle University played praying mantises footage of contours made to insects moving across a background.
The motion was created to be like the adventures of praying mantises in the wild.
The bugs, some of which were narrow or broad stripes, would move at various speeds.
Scientists found the mantises found it particularly hard to spot the bugs using stripes moving at speeds.
This is believed to be since the stripes onto the creature observable into the predator and more difficult to observe when they proceed at speed.
While it has been known for some time now that animals camouflage better by mixing into their surroundings, it is the first time it has been proven that a few animals gain from going to hide themselves.
The author Professor Chocolate Rowe, of this research, explained that stripes and speed are a winning combination from the wild.
“While we did so experiment together with all praying mantises chasing rectangular bugs on a computer screen, the exact same principle should apply in the wild,” he explained.
“So maybe stripes help to hide zebras running on the plains, or hoverflies flitting from flower to flower,” she said.Prof Rowe proceeded to say that footballers could benefit from the findings.
“So Newcastle United’s stripes could possibly be assisting throw off their opponents – as long as the players are running quickly enough,” she said.
