John Johnson: Rams teammate Eric Weddle ‘a genius’

The 2018 season proved to be effective for the Los Angeles Rams, and John Johnson III is already looking ahead to how the staff could build on that achievement in 2019.
In an appearance on Total Access on Monday, Johnson touched some of the most interesting developments of his team including the inclusion of Guru Bowl-level talent most notably safety Eric Weddle.
“He’s just a genius. I have not seen anybody like him,” said the 23-year-old Johnson of this savvy veteran. “I have not been in the league long but I know he is a particular one and I am eager to find out what we can do. Not just how it can make me but I am excited to see what he and I can do for this whole defense.”

34, weddle, signed with the Rams. During his profession, he has been the NFL interceptions leader in 2011 — 2011, 2013 and 2014 with the Chargers and 2016-18 with the Ravens — and has been named to six Pro Bowls.
In all 16 games, Johnson started as a beginner in 2018 and donated 119 tackles and 11 pass deflections. His greatest highlight of this season came from the NFC Championship Game when he intercepted Drew Brees in overtime to help push the Rams and on to Super Bowl LIII.
During his TA appearance, Johnson was asked to reflect the way the team has been able to refocus after falling to the New England Patriots 13-3 back. His response indicated a team that’s dead set on getting back to the game in 2020.
“I would not say it is amnesia but I really do think we turned into the page. This is a group that is new. We dropped guys, we obtained free brokers, rookies, undrafted free agents; this really is a whole new group,” he said. “We must start new, we know exactly what it takes to get there, we all understand we must do more to acquire it.
“I think that it’s just turning the page, beginning fresh but it’s definitely a little more fuel to lead up to this year, for sure.”
