General manager Mickey Loomis told Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio recently the Saints have experienced”some discussions” about a new contract for the star receiver but would not go into detail.
“We’ve had some conversations, and I like keeping that close to the vest until there’s something to report, but look, we adore what Mike’s done for us,” Loomis said. “He is a fantastic player, one of the best in his position in the league, and hopefully we can keep him a Saint for a long time too.”
Goal being received by the Saints go-to, Thomas has become one of the dangers in the NFL, compiling 1,000-plus yards along with a least 90 catches each of his three seasons. As Drew Brees’ security blanket, the wideout is currently coming off a 1,405-yard year old.
A second-round pick in 2016, Thomas enters the final period of his rookie contract, set to create $1.148 million — peanuts compared to his values. There’s little doubt the Saints would love to keep their No. 1 target paid and happy. But the franchise tag seems probable for the star receiver, if it doesn’t occur within the next few months.
