General manager Mickey Loomis told Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio lately the Saints have experienced”some conversations” to a new contract for the star receiver but wouldn’t go into detail.
“We’ve had some conversations, and I enjoy keeping that close to the vest until there’s something to report, but lookwe love what Mike’s done for us,” Loomis said. “He is a fantastic player, among the best at his position in the league, and hopefully we can keep him a Saint for quite a while too.”
Goal being received by the Saints go-to, Thomas has become one of the most consistent dangers in the NFL, compiling a least and 1,000-plus yards 90 catches each of his first three seasons. As Drew Brees’ security blanket, the wideout that is 26-year-old is coming off a 125-catch, 1,405-yard year old.
A second-round choice in 2016, Thomas enters the final season of his rookie contract, set to create $1.148 million — peanuts in comparison to his values. There is little doubt the Saints would like to keep their No. 1 target paid and happy. However, the franchise tag seems probable for the star receiver if it does not happen in the upcoming few months.
