The Hundred: Tom Banton talks Chris Gayle and golf ahead of draft
The magnificent summer of tom Banton has earned him choice and a England call-up for Your Hundred. Ahead of the draft that was live , we spoke exclusively to the Somerset star.
The 20-year-old was one of the emerging talents in the 2019 season – scoring 549 runs at the Vitality Blast at a mean of 42.23 plus a stunning strike-rate of 161.43.
He is now reaping the rewards due to his prodigious performances and scored a critical half-century in the Royal London One-Day Cup victory of Somerset at Lords in May.
How excited are you to be involved with The Hundred?
I am actually looking forward to it! A new format, Clearly, a rivalry, it is going to be interesting to see just how things move in the first couple of games.
Who do you expect the Welsh Fire draft to play you?
Im chuffed to figure out Jonny Bairstow has united us, so hopefully Ill get the opportunity to open the batting with him at some point. From the draft, if we could also add Chris Gayle, which will be amazing! Watching him over the years, I have seen him ruin all types of attacks. That could be some purchase! Ive never been engaged in a draft before. As an celebrity player, I will be concerned there on the day, that is cool.
Which your England partners on other teams do you most want to get over one?
I am excited to confront all of them, as I havent played with many of them before – understandably, theyre not round about the county circuit all that much. I played with Sam Curran plus Surrey a few times earlier this season (scoring 71 and 47) and this was a fantastic battle, so itd be useful to come up from him .
An England call-up and now selected for The Hundred; can you believe the year?
The summer was great! I would not have believed you In the event that you had stated which all this could occur. I havent really looked back since, but find out exactly where things go and I have only got to keep advancing.
What type of crowds are you expecting for Your Hundred?
Cardiff is famous for vocal and big crowds so that I dont think we will have some trouble! But therell be a brand new audience attending as well with all the competition appealing to families, particularly children. It is very important to build upon the cricket people that is out there.
Could it become a global success that is big like T20 ahead?
Im not sure if it is going to grow abroad quite like T20 has – nobody understands that at this stage – but I find it being a real success. The very first few games may be a bit odd to view – for people as players also, trying to suss out the rules all – but Im really looking forward to it.
You are most excited by what aspect of this Hundred?
Seeing the kits all now they have been released is pretty cool. Everything is only a bit larger and brighter.
To all those new into this Welsh Fire, what will you bring to also The Hundred and the sport?
I will hopefully get them off. I am also a wicketkeeper as well, if necessary, and that brings an additional facet to my game.
And what is a interesting fact about you outside of the game of cricket?
I like to believe Im great in golf, but I am pretty bad! A few of the England boys have been currently carrying their golf things to New Zealand – I do not believe Im pretty good enough to mix it yet, but hopefully theyll give me some pointers.
100 bouncers out of Jofra Archer or you over against him with no padding?
One over I guess. I confronted one bouncer last year, and that has been already more than enough!
100 hundreds in just one match-winning ton or defeat?
Thats a tricky one. However, Im likely to go with the 100 hundreds but although I should probably state the perfect thing.
100 chillis or one ghost chilli?
One ghost chilli. One hundred percent.
100 bungee jumps or one sky dive out of space?
I really dont know whether I could bring myself to jump 100 times, so I suppose it would need to function as sky dive from space.
100 a duck or even duck-sized horses?
One horse-sized duck. I guess that will be more easy to take care of.
