As Southampton at St Marys swept aside to climb to fifth in the Premier League, tammy Abraham scored his eighth league goal of the year.
Chelsea dominated from the outset and took the lead when Abraham ending from Callum Hudson-Odois pass was adjudged to have crossed the line prior to the intervention of Mayas Yoshida.
Mason Mount awakened the Blues lead until Danny Ings poked at home Yan Valerys.
The people restored their two-goal advantage five minutes before half-time, NGolo Kantes hit from the edge of the place taking a wicked deflection off Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in its way beyond Angus Gunn.
2 second-half substitutes combined to put up Michy Batshuayi slotting home Christian Pulisics through-ball to place the seal on a hit for Frank Lampards side, Chelseas fourth.
The outcome leaves struggling Southampton at place – only 1 point above the relegation zone.
After a stuttering start to the campaign, there are signs that this Chelsea side that is young are beginning to build a head of steam up beneath Lampard.
This is the Blues fourth win in all competitions – an effect which lifts them level on points with fourth-placed Leicester City and only two behind champions Manchester City, who lost .
Youngsters Abraham and Mount have obtained the very best flight by storm after spending last season on loan at Aston Villa and Derby County respectively, and the duo were heavily involved here since the visitors raced into an early lead.
Hudson-Odoi delivered a ball over the top of the Southampton defence before the ball can clear to safety and Abraham was to it , his inaugural finish over Gunn crossing the line.
Chelsea capitalised on a bad piece of Southampton protecting to twice their lead seven minutes later, Mount latching on to Willians precise pass before hammering home his fourth league goal of the effort.
There appeared to be no way back for the Saints at the point as Chelsea continued to lay siege to the house goal, but Ralph Hasenhuttls side pulled a goal back out of nothing once Valery wriggled his way past many Blues defenders before setting up Ings, that had been left with an easy finish.
There was an element of fortune about the third of Chelsea – Kante drive deflecting off Hojbjerg along with Gunn – however, the people might have won with a margin.
Hudson-Odoi was thwarted by Gunn four minutes after the restart, while Abraham and Willian both had attempts blocked from the areas edge.
Batshuayi finished the scoring in the final minute of normal time, running on to Pulisics pass and slotting the ball through Gunns legs.
More to follow.
