As Southampton at St Marys drifted apart to climb to fifth in the Premier League tammy Abraham scored his eighth league goal of the year.
Chelsea took the lead after Abraham finish from Callum Hudson-Odois pass was adjudged to have crossed the line prior to the intervention of Mayas Yoshida and dominated from the outset.
Mason Mount awakened the Blues lead until Danny Ings poked at home Yan Valerys.
The visitors restored their two-goal edge five minutes before half-time, NGolo Kantes strike from the edge of the place carrying a wicked deflection away Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on its way past Angus Gunn.
Two replacements united to put up Michy Batshuayi slotting house Christian Pulisics through-ball to set the seal on a success for Frank Lampards side, Chelseas fourth.
The outcome leaves struggling Southampton at 16th place – just 1 point above the relegation zone.
After a stuttering start to the campaign, there are signs that this Chelsea side that is young are beginning to build up a head of steam .
This is the Blues fourth win in all competitions – an effect which lifts them level on points with Leicester City and just two supporting champions Manchester City, who lost 2-0 at home to Wolves.
Youngsters Abraham and Mount have obtained the very best flight from storm after spending last year on loan at Aston Villa and Derby County respectively, and the duo were heavily involved here since the visitors raced into an early lead.
Hudson-Odoi delivered a ball before the ball could clear to safety and Abraham was to it , his looping conclusion over Gunn crossing the line.
Chelsea capitalised on a bad part of Southampton protecting to twice their lead seven minutes later, Mount latching on to the exact pass of Willian before hammering his fourth league goal of the campaign.
There seemed to be no way back to the Saints at that stage as Chelsea continued to lay siege to the home target, but Ralph Hasenhuttls side pulled a goal back out of nothing Valery wriggled his way past a few Blues defenders before putting up Ings, that was left with an easy finish.
There was an element of fortune about Chelseas third – Kante drive deflecting off Hojbjerg along with Gunn – but the dominant people could have won by a margin.
Hudson-Odoi had been blindsided by Gunn four minutes after the restart, while Willian and Abraham both had attempts blocked by the areas edge.
Batshuayi finally finished the scoring in the last minute of normal time, running on to the pass of Pulisic and slotting the ball through the legs of Gunn.
More to follow.
